There are two issues here. How to interpret application direction for derailers and if using "both" how to interpret the derailing side.

In Norway we only have derailers valid in either normal or reverse application direction. Ref top image on railML wiki page for derailer [1]. The shown derailer (picture is taken from the back of the derailer) has the intended derail application direction (in the image) from left to right). Some have argued that a wagon hitting the derailer from right to left would also derail. But as this is not the intended application direction, I would suggest to make the documentation more clear (for none derailer experts... 😉) in this matter.

Example for a derailer with application direction "both" would be as shown in top image titled "Hinged derail with automatic blue flag» in Wikipedia page [2]

For derailers with application direction "both" there is no defined @derailSide with the current definition of the documentation [1]:

@derailSide: the side to which the railway vehicle will be derailed in reference to the application direction of the derailer: possible values are left and right (optional; xs:string)
Possible values:
• left: the railway vehicle will be derailed to the left side in reference to the application direction of the derailer
• right: the railway vehicle will be derailed to the left side in reference to the application direction of the derailer

I suggest adding to the documentation in the next service release:
If @applicationDirection is set to "both" then @derailside follows the direction of the referenced net element(s).
