Dear all,

Our client would like to transfer additional data for switches via railML 3:
- ratio, e.g. 1:7, 1:8.21, 1:9, 1:11.3, ...
- rail weight

We propose to add new attributes to <switchIS> or <switchIS>/<left/rightBranch>

I agree that this would be beneficial. The ratio gives the size of the switch. The ratio represents the distance along the main diverging track for every unit of distance the diverging track moves perpendicular to the main track. A ratio with a higher denominator (1:12) means a shallower angle and a gentler, longer curve, which allows for higher speeds, while a lower denominator (1:8) indicates a sharper, shorter curve and lower maximum speed.

Dear all,

I can confirm, on behalf of Bane NOR, that this is something we are interested in modelling as part of railML.

The rail weight in this case would be a kg/m value, derived from our technical regulations. Some common ones at Bane NOR are:
54E3 (54.54 kg/m)
54E4 (54,31 kg/m)
60E1 (60,21 kg/m)
60E2 (60,03 kg/m)

Jernbanedirektoratet would also need the "ratio" as we then can design conceptual deflecting speeds from the size of the switch defined by ratio and deflecting radius. We currently transfer ratio in the switch description attribute.

Dear all,

I have been able to extract a little more information on the background for relaying the rail weight for switches in our ETCS design process. The configuration and installation of point machines differs based on the rail weight (60kg, 54kg, 49kg etc.), and is typically communicated to our suppliers through written documents. This may continue, but since the weight of is an important parameter it makes sense to have it being part of our models as well.

The contouring of the track is not an important factor in this configuration, but it typically affects other physical properties of the switch. One example of this is the distance between the rail joint and point tip of the switch (small differences, but still differences).

Both Siemens and internal Bane NOR colleagues have confirmed this information about the rail weight.

I have checked what Bane NOR databases describe with regards to this for our tracks as well, and it seems the tracks themselves (which are the ones we typically model in railML) do not have this property. It is rather the rails themselves (not part of our modelling) that describes such properties, which makes sense since the two (or in rare cases even more) rails are separate physical objects. This, I think, supports the direction of having such a parameter for switches.

Dear all,

let me summarize the solution proposal for the switch ratio as described in updated Gitlab issue #685 [1]:

* The attribute @ratio shall be added to elements <switchIS> and <crossing>.
* The ratio describes the tangens of the switch/crossing angle at the end of the switch/crossing
* The attribute contains the denominator of the ratio of the switch/crossing.
* The attribute's data type shall be a float value greater than zero.
* Typical values are "18.5", "14", "12", "9", or "7.5". Other values are possible.
