Details:
Albtal‑Verkehrs‑Gesellschaft mbH (AVG) is a regional rail transport operator and railway infrastructure manager based in Karlsruhe, Germany. The company plans, operates, and maintains passenger rail services on its own infrastructure as well as on mainlines owned by DB InfraGO. AVG’s network links urban tramway systems with mainline railway operations, allowing continuous passenger services across different technical and regulatory domains. This operating concept, developed in the 1990s, is commonly referred to in the railway sector as tram-train or the Karlsruhe Model.
From a technical and organizational perspective, AVG is responsible for timetable planning, train operations, infrastructure maintenance, and the coordination of interfaces between tramway and railway systems. Rolling stock is designed for dual‑system operation, meeting both tramway and railway standards. In digital operations and planning, AVG uses railML as a standardized data format to exchange timetable and operational data between software systems covering different stages of railway planning and execution.
