Recap: Workshop on the railML® 3.2 Advanced Example

by Sharon Király (railML.org)

The railML® 3.2 Advanced Example Workshop took place on 4th November 2025 in Madrid as part of the 48th railML Conference’s surrounding programme.

By providing a detailed, mostly fictional example of railML® 3.2 usage, the workshop gave attendees an overall understanding, as well as a comparison to the previous railML 2.x versions. The presentation (available for download below) was split into three parts along the subschemas Infrastructure, Timetable, and Interlocking to showcase their application in railML® v3.x.

The subschemas Infrastructure and Timetable refer to a fictional Infrastructure setting, the railML Advanced Example (which is available for download down below), while for Interlocking the real-life-station Rombak in Norway was chosen as the basis for explaining the railML 3 modelling.

For each subschema, the Advanced example was built by increasing complexity step-by-step while providing in-depth description along the way.

The workshop was particularly appreciated by attendees who had not previously worked with railML® at all or who were only experienced with railML® versions 2.x.

We are confident that this workshop will benefit railML partners in the long run, helping to streamline implementation processes. Going forward, the Workshop Advanced Example might be adapted to remain up to date with railML® versions 3.3 and 3.4. Let us know if there is anything you would like to add to a future railML® Advanced Example by reaching out to the railML.org organisational team. Your feedback is always welcome.
