In the Institute of Transportation Systems of the German Aerospace Center, under the direction of Prof. Dr.-Ing. Karsten Lemmer more than 150 researchers develop new, user-oriented solutions for increasing safety and efficiency of road and rail transport in interdisciplinary teams.
The research activities in the field of Railway Systems concentrate on the development of innovative technologies and methods for operational, technical and economic optimisation in the context of railway automation. Our goal is to make rail traffic more safe, efficient and competitive while advancing the European harmonization.
railML® is used and enhanced in various fields, e.g. for modelling the rail infrastructure in a map within train-borne positioning algorithms that have been developed at the institute and which have been implemented in position-based services like the Railway Collision Avoidance System RCAS. The software tool Railonomics®-Infra imports infrastructure, timetable and rolling stock data from operational simulations and evaluates them in order to calculate an optimally sized infrastructure in line with demand. Furthermore, railML® is used in the railway specific laboratory RailSiTe® for exchanging data between simulation environment and visualisation.
