Cooperation
Alongside schema development with its partners railML.org cooperates with other organisations within the transport sector and also with standards organisations.
International Organization for Standardization (ISO)
The International Organization for Standardization officially began operations in 1947 with the goal to facilitate international coordination and unify industrial standards. To date, the organization counts members from over 164 countries within its ranks and has published over 23.000 International Standards.
As of 2020, railML.org is an official liaison to the ISO Technical Committee Intelligent Transport Systems (TC 204). The task of ISO/TC 204 is the "standardization of information, communication and control systems in the field of urban and rural surface transportation." The task of railML.org is to offer support in the development of the Project 4398 by providing a number of experts with development experience and an insight into the needs of the railway industry.
European Union Agency for Railways (ERA)
The central idea of the European Union Agency for Railways (ERA) is to offer the EU Member States and the Commission a technical assistance in the fields of railway safety and interoperability. Practically that implies the development and implementation of Technical Specifications for Interoperability and a mutual approach to questions concerning railway safety. ERA's main task is to manage the preparation of these measures. railML.org cooperates with ERA in the RINF project.
Union Internationale des Chemins de Fer (UIC)
The International Union of Railways, the UIC, was founded in 1922 and is the worldwide organisation for the promotion of rail transport at a global level and for collaborative development of the railway system. Its principle focus is on standardising industry practices. Its membership base of 219 members spans 82 countries across 5 continents.
railML.org has been working with UIC since early 2012, with the main objective being to develop a new railway infrastructure model called RailTopoModel. In Spring 2016 RailTopoModel became one of the UIC's new International Railway Standards: "IRS 30100". For more information about RailTopoModel please visit the website.
Between 2013 and 2017, in collaboration with the UIC, railML.org organised conferences on the theme railway infrastructure data management and organisation.
European Organisation for the Safety of Air Navigation (EUROCONTROL)
The European Organisation for the Safety of Air Navigation (EUROCONTROL) is an international organisation coordinating air traffic control in Europe. AIXM (Aeronautical Information Exchange Model) is a model initiated by EUROCONTROL which is based on XML. It enables the management and distribution of Aeronautical Information Services data in digital format and is comparable with railML in the aviation sector.
railML.org took part in the 2015 SWIM master class in Brussels to give information about the railML data exchange schema and the data provided by the partners of railML.org (e.g. railway timetables for surface sectors of an air trip).
With this cooperation we hope to connect the work in the fields of aviation and rail transport by the collaborative usage of data.
