Working for railML provides an opportunity to contribute towards shaping the development of the global railway data industry. Our network of organisations, located in Europe, Asia and Australia, is committed to exploring, discussing and presenting systematic, XML-based solutions for streamlining data exchange between railway applications.

Internship

We are looking for motivated students to perform research and training activities, thereby offering distinctive inquiry-based learning opportunities. To integrate research and teaching, the research centre regularly organises internships for undergraduate and graduate students engaged in research for school projects, Master's and PhD thesis, and other academic pursuits. Consequently, students and faculty (including student supervisors and railML coordinators) are involved in international research and collaborative projects. The findings of the research are made available as open source and published as new railML versions incorporating new technologies, as well as in scientific journals.

Key activities:

  • Develop mappings between railML3 and SFERA, TAP, TSI and other relevant standards
  • Update and expand tutorials for railML infrastructure, interlocking and timetable data.
  • Improve interoperability between railML railway infrastructure data and GIS with GDAL.
  • Optimize print layout quality of the railML Wiki using CSS for consistency with web display.
  • Develop UML model extensions for railML.
  • Refine approaches for infrastructure change management in railML.
  • Enhance railML model for Traffic Management Systems.

Your profile:

  • Currently enrolled in a Bachelor's/Master’s Degree in Railway Infrastructure and Railway Informatics or related field.
  • Fluent in English or German. Support from a native Ukrainian researcher may be available initially.
  • Familiar with railway infrastructure or timetable development (schematic track plan, train paths).
  • Working knowledge of XML and UML. Programming skills are a plus.
