Hello all,

as with national ocp code numbers, train numbers are only unique within
one country (or not even this).
To uniquely identify a train the country code of the network operator that
assigned the train number has to be known to.
A use would be an international timetable information system.

This would imply to add a country code attribute to any element that has a
trainNumber attribute... or to be more precise: to add a country code
attribute to every trainNumber attribute since <trainPart> has two of them.

At the moment I would suggest not to take immediate action but to wait for
the development at Rail Net Europe, since they are still struggling with
the unique identification of trains and maybe some surprising new
attributes will show up in near future.

@Joachim Rubröder: I can monitor the process for railML if you like.

Best wishes

Dear Simon,

it's a fact that train numbers are not necessary unique. There is even an
example in Switzerland with the same train number for different trains
within a station.

So I agree that we should not take any immediate action and wait for Rail
Net Europe and their suggested solution for this problem. Would you please
keep an eye at their develepoments for a future integration in railML?

Best wishes
