BIM and railML®

BIM is the abbreviation for Building Information Modelling and describes the whole life cycle of a construction project. On the basis of a 3D model with height, width and depth data of components, the two dimensions of time and costs are added. This finally leads to a 5D model that shall revolutionise the way of constructing. It aims at making construction projects more economic, sustainable and punctual. Currently, for example DB (Deutsche Bahn) is testing BIM in two big railway construction projects.

On the 28th of January 2016 representatives of railML.org and BIM from France, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and China met in Paris to discuss potential interfaces and collaboration possibilities. As a conclusion the participants agreed to work on linking BIM with railML and especially RailTopoModel in future.
