The Birmingham Centre for Railway Research and Education (BCRRE) at the University of Birmingham is a leading academic research group in the rail domain. Drawing on a team of over 130 academic staff, researchers, and Ph.D. students, the centre is actively involved in projects ranging from data and information management, to systems engineering, energy and power, traffic management and optimization, remote condition monitoring, non-destructive testing, aerodynamics and civils.
The centre’s data and information team have a strong background in railway led ICT research, and research activity in this area has taken place for over ten years. Initial work focused on information exchange for rail applications using ontology, and later expanded into data management for condition monitoring applications. In 2009 the team was awarded a £1.65 million Strategic Partnership agreement with Network Rail focusing specifically on ICT-related topics. More recently the team has branched out into new research areas including big data, and cyber security.
